Minister Sheridan: PEI residents deserve to retire with dignity

If we don't convince the politicians to expand the CPP today, things will only get worse for the next generation of workers. You and I know that more and more of the new jobs being created pay less than the jobs we've lost. It's getting harder for working people to save for retirement and they need help.

That's why it's critical for us to win. We need to make the politicians realize that ducking the problem today only makes things worse for future generations. I know I can count on you to help. As a resident of Prince Edward Island, I am deeply concerned by the lack of urgency governments are currently demonstrating on Canada's retirement security crisis.
Almost 9,400 seniors in Prince Edward Island collect the Guaranteed Income Supplement to federal Old Age Security Pensions (and therefore earn little more than $15,000&nbsp;each year pre tax); 
Like most Canadians, many Prince Edward Islanders do not have access to a workplace pension and many have no retirement savings whatsoever; Employers like Nortel aren't honouring their pension obligations. 
 
I think every resident of Prince Edward Island and every Canadian deserves to retire with dignity after a lifetime of work. 
 
Prince Edward Islanders need security and certainty in their retirement and they want no less for their children. The time for change is now. This is not the time to pass the buck to our children's generation. We can no longer duck this issue by pretending the current system is adequate, secure or fair.
That's why I support the call to expand Canada Pension Plan benefits, to eliminate poverty for today's seniors by increasing the GIS by 15%, and to ensure that companies and corporations live up to their contractual pension obligations.
