Municipalities Matter

We are now living in a time when over 80% of people in Canada and around the world live in cities. We are seeing changes in the economy, environment and populations. Canada is one of the only developed countries without a National Urban Strategy, nor a National Transportation Strategy nor any other way to deal with the ever changing nature of our communities.

The federal government today refuses to take leadership on urban issues by using the excuse of provincial sovereignty and instead has left our country without a vision or a strategy for the future.

We believe by addressing these 5 issues that we can build vibrant and sustainable communities:

Take action in your community:

  • Get out and vote when your municipality has an election - check the schedule here.
  • Volunteer to help progressive school board trustees and city councillors get elected. Contact your local labour council to find out how.
  • After the election there is still work to do. Help your labour council lobby for EI reform & buy local policies.  E.I. is the most powerful of all economic stabilizers and its reform is vital to the well being of cities.
  • Buy local (Made-In-Canada): municipalities buy a lot of goods and services from pencils and coffee to buses and infrastructure projects. To help
stimulate and support local job creation and build our crumbling infrastructure and communities, we should adopt (Made-In-Canada) policies.
  • Get informed, attend a school board trustee meeting or a city council meeting. They are open to the public.
