Training Programme/Union Education
October 2007 - September 2012
This Local Union Training Program project run by the CLC enables the National Union of Civil Construction Workers, Wood Workers, and Miners in Mozambique (SINTICIM) to expand their network and to inform workers about democratic trade unionism. The goal of this project is to give workers a greater awareness about unions and to enable them to better protect their interests and rights.
Through seminars for leaders of local union committees, members, activists and members of the Committee of Working Women, workers have learnt better techniques in the negotiation of collective agreements, resolution of labour conflicts and the promotion of a fair and peaceful labour relations environment.
Moatize Mining Company in particular has experienced a change for the better! There is a decent relationship between workers and management now, they even purchased an ambulance to be onsite for the miners and a new dining room was built. The company also purchased adequate equipment for mining operations, specifically signal systems for the areas where heavy equipment is operating all in the name of increasing the health and safety of the workers.
Although the construction sector is dominated by men, women have pressured for gender equality within the union. This has prompted more women to become union members. In four of the eleven provinces of Mozambique, the provincial head of SINTICIM is a woman.
The Canadian Labour Congress works in partnership with the National Union of Civil Construction Workers, Wood Workers, and Miners in Mozambique (SINTICIM), and the United Steelworkers / Steelworkers Humanity Fund (USW)
