Until last month, Canadian and U.S. governments were in negotiations about a “pre-clearance” pilot project for vehicles crossing the border. The project was to take place at a facility on the Canadian side of the Peace Bridge (linking Buffalo NY and Fort Erie ON) for commercial traffic. There is a large plaza on the Canadian side, the idea was to put U.S. and Canadian customs guards together in an expanded border facility.
You may have heard about the US “no-fly list” which bans certain people from flying on commercial airlines. Canada’s no-fly list comes into effect on June 18th. Last Wednesday (May 23, 2007), we read in the Globe and Mail that air carriers have announced they will continue to use the U.S. no-fly list, even on Canadian domestic flights, and even after the Canadian list comes into effect. Foreign airlines that fly to and from Canada will be privy to the list, butindividuals on the list will not be told they are on it.
