You suggest in the recent editorial that we need a thorough debate on retirement security. That is just what has been occurring for the past year.
The country's finance ministers have had experts looking at the question of pension reform.
The federal finance minister has held town hall meetings and consultations.
The federal, provincial and territorial finance ministers met in Whitehorse in December 2009, and more recently in Prince Edward Island. The Canadian Labour Congress has sponsored dozens of meetings along with groups representing retirees and other citizen groups.
Most of the finance ministers agree with us that an enhanced CPP is the best way to ensure retirement security and that it is affordable.
Expanding the CPP will ensure that all Canadians, regardless of where they work, can enjoy a better retirement.
Our goal is simple -- retirement security for everyone. Those opposing CPP reform today do so for ideological reasons and render a disservice to others seeking to make positive change.
