CLC president Ken Georgetti says that a new set of bail conditions imposed on Alex Hundert, an accused protester at last summer’s G20 summit in Toronto, are “chilling.” Hundert was released in July on $100,000 bail with terms, including not participating in any public demonstration. On October 13, a Toronto judge made those conditions even more stringent. The terms include a restriction on Hundert’s planning, participating in, or attending any public event that expresses views on a political issue and he is also restricted from speaking to the media.
“The court has gone way too far in restricting Mr. Hundert’s rights,” says Georgetti. “Tens of thousands of citizens were expressing their democratic right in Toronto last summer in sending a message to G20 leaders about the need to create jobs and support the unemployed. The police over-reacted and stripped many people of their rights in a manner unbecoming of a democratic society.”
